2016 Meaningful Use Deadline Extended Again

Calling all procrastinators!

If your organization has put off attesting for Modified Stage 2 Meaningful Use (MU), you’re in luck!

Initially, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services extended the deadline to February 28, 2017 as the cut off to attest for the 2016 calendar year; however, that deadline has been pushed back again.

Providers participating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program now have until to Monday, March 13, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

If the deadline extension is good news for your organization, it is time to focus on completing a bona fide HIPAA Security Risk Analysis (SRA). Aside from being a critical component of attesting for MU, an SRA demonstrates a good faith effort in prioritizing the safety of electronic protected health information.

HIPAA requires organizations that handle ePHI to regularly review the administrative, physical and technical safeguards they have in place to protect the security of the information. By conducting these risk assessments, health care providers can uncover potential weaknesses in their security policies, processes and systems.
